Publishing Law and Use of Social Networking Sites for Churches
Instructor: David L. Bea, Attorney at Law, David L. Bea & Associates
More and more churches are getting involved in publishing activities often without being aware of the legal issues involved. It happens when they create and print curriculum for youth, post information on the Internet, stream sermons online, or repackage sermons into books or booklets. Who owns these works and how can they be properly used and protected? Pastors are blogging and using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to communicate. What are the related legal issues? Church leaders need a basic understanding of copyright, trademark, and contract law in order to properly deal with these issues. This workshop is intended to help church business administrators understand the legal issues involved in various forms of traditional and new media publishing, how to avoid pitfalls, and how to protect and properly use content owned by the church.
