5th Annual Conference on International Giving “Sustaining Philanthropy: Community Empowerment in a Changing World.”
September 23 and 24, 2008
The Standard Club
320 South Plymouth Court
Chicago, IL 60604
The Annual Conference on International Giving is the Chicago Global Donors Network’s signature event. It is the only conference in the Midwest that focuses specifically on global giving and that brings together donors and practitioners to discuss how philanthropic strategies can address global issues. This year joining us as keynote speakers will be: Molly Melching, human rights and health activist whose work with African women has become the model for community-initiated elimination of female genital cutting; Delano Lewis, former Peace Corp director, CEO and president of National Public Radio and U.S. Ambassador to South Africa; and Marc Kielburger, executive director of Free The Children, a youth movement for global change, and co-founder of Me to We, a social enterprise providing consumers with socially responsible choices.
In addition to a full program of discussions and presentations led by donors and experts in the field, our program highlights a panel specifically addressing the global food crisis, one of the most pressing issues of our day. E. Walter Coward, Jr. of Cornell University will facilitate a panel including Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University’s Earth Institute (via satellite), Eric Holt-Gimenez of Food First, and Paul Wormley of One Acre Fund. We’ll close with a multi-media presentation on the media’s role in community empowerment, sponsored by the Benton Foundation, the Oprah Winfrey Foundation, and the Entertainment Industry Foundation.
The 5th Annual Conference will bring together our extraordinary network of global donors, including young people and members of Chicago’s diaspora communities, to discuss how we can make philanthropy truly sustaining by empowering communities to support the programs that sustain their societies and the entire planet.
